Our Story
The farm came first. Everything else is a way into it.
Chalo began with a simple ambition: to create a place where people could take part in the life of a working farm, not merely look at one from a distance.
We were inspired by farm estates that make the land a destination in its own right. Chalo had to grow from Chitedze: from Malawian seasons, and from the crops, water, work, and people already here.
So the farm came first. Harvest Table gave guests a way to taste it. The villas made it possible to stay as the light changed and wake when the work began again. Gatherings brought more people onto the land. Each new part became another door into the same world.
The estate was built to stand on its own — solar power off the national grid, water from its own borehole, purified and sterilised for drinking, and irrigation from the farm's own system. A lighter footprint is simply what that independence looks like.
The Idea
The farm is the destination
Chalo is not a collection of rooms with a farm attached. It is living land with places to eat, sleep, meet, wander, and return.
A guest may arrive for lunch, a night away, a wedding, or a morning walk. Those are different reasons for coming, but they all lead to the same experience: time spent closer to the rhythms of the farm.
The food, rooms, and events matter because they let people live inside that rhythm.
Walk the rows before lunch and the plate means something different.
Stay after dinner and the quiet becomes part of the meal.
Wake with the farm and Chalo becomes more than somewhere you visited. For a little while, it becomes a way of living.
The land keeps the story moving
The season changes, the rows change, and the food changes with them. That is why Chalo should never feel finished or fixed. The working farm gives every visit its own moment and every return something new to notice.
